Decaffeinated (decaf) coffee

Decaffeinated coffee is made from beans that have had the caffeine removed and typically contains 1 - 2 % of the original caffeine content. Decaffeinated products are commonly termed 'decaf'.

Our decaf coffee is decaffeinated using the Sparkling Water Decaffeination Process, which is a gentle, natural and organically certified process that ensures the beans retain a high level of their original flavour and aroma.

How do they do that?...

  1. the green beans are cleaned and moistened with water. This makes the beans expand, opening the pores and releasing the caffeine molecules.
  2. Carbon dioxide is then mixed with the added water to essentially form sparkling water. The carbon dioxide circulates through the beans, acting like a magnet, drawing out the caffeine molecules.
  3. The caffeine-rich carbon dioxide is then drawn out of the water, leaving caffeine-free water to be returned for another cycle.
  4. This cycle is repeated until the required caffeine level is reached and the green beans are discharged into a drier.
  5. The decaffeinated coffee beans are gently dried, after which they are ready for roasting.
